What's Behind Marugame Udon's Long Queue

by - Saturday, April 28, 2018

We've discovered Marugame Udon even before it became well known and opened several branches. We often passed by this place while walking around High Street, but we never thought that this place would end up having a queue every single day.

Marugame Udon is a simple Japanese restaurant that specializes in serving udon and tempura. It offers a slightly different dining experience to customers, as it's pretty much like a cafeteria where you order your food at the counter, pay at the end, and carry your food to a table to eat. This is common in Japan, really.

So we arrived Marugame Udon at around 6:30pm and there was already a line outside of the establishment. We waited to be able to come inside and start ordering. It doesn't take too long, if that's what you're worried about. The food is served fast, and customers just normally eats and walks out right after, which cuts the waiting time of the next customers.

The real deal with Marugame Udon, though, is the affordability of their food. For less than P500, you'll be able to carry a tray filled with several of your favorite Japanese mains and sides to your table. This is what made my tummy really happy, as I was able to try a little bit of everything for a fair price!

I got the chicken paitan udon since I wanted to try their udon and have some soup. The broth of the paitan udon was not as heavy as most of the ramen we have here, but it certainly wasn't too light that it already lacked flavor. I liked its simple, not too rich taste with the added touch of black pepper and chicken strips.

I liked all the sides, although I don't really have anything special to say about them, aside from the fact that you can get to try a lot of them and not end up draining your wallet. I did, however, really liked their tempura, even though I just had a piece. I liked how the batter was light, thin, and crispy, and the shrimp being coated tasted fresh and not overcooked. I think the fact that it was fresh out of the fryer made me like it more than I would have if it was not.

Overall, although I'm saying that all the items at Marugame Udon are really affordable, I still ended up paying close to P400 for a meal, but that is with a lot of different items on my plate and a very very satisfied tummy after.
