Extraordinary Japanese Cuisine at Nobu Restaurant

by - Friday, July 14, 2017

Many ask me what my favorite food is, and I can't give a straight answer. I always tell people that I love almost all food, and that the food that I would want to eat always depends on what I am in the mood for, or what I am craving for. But if I am to answer the question everyone is asking, I am positive that Japanese food is out of the picture. Don't hate me. It's just that Japanese food is the cuisine that I least crave for, and it is likely because I only eat the ramen, or maki, or katsu. But my trip to Nobu restaurant changed all that, making me discover something about myself that I didn't think was possible.

I don't eat raw food. All my friends know that. It would take a miracle for anyone to make me eat sashimi, more so like it. Yet, here I am writing a 5.0 review about a restaurant that served me an 8-course meal that consists mostly of raw fish. You'll soon learn how they were able to successfully win my tastebuds so flawlessly.

1st Course: Toro Tartare with Caviar
1st Course: Toro Tartare with Caviar
Tuna tartare topped with scallion and caviar, served with a komomo fruit (baby peach) on the side. What I loved about my very first dish from this omakase is the smoothness of the tartarte, plus the sweet komomo fruit to end it.

2ND COURSE - SIGNATURE TRIO

2nd Course: Signature Trio

YELLOWTAIL JALAPENO
Fresh yellowtail topped with Jalapeno slices, cilantro and black salt. The black salt is the one thing that fascinates me most about this dish. It's like a rock salt but sharper, which gave the fish more flavor.

KUMAMOTO OYSTER NEW STYLE
Australian oysters, olive oil, ginger, sesame seeds. The touch of oil/ special sauce used gave the oyster not only a light gloss, but also a brand new, revitalizing taste. No need for wasabi on this one.

LAPU LAPU TIRADITO
Lapu Lapu Tiradito
Lapu Lapu with a South American/ Peruvian twist, topped with chili and cilantro

3rd Course: Salmon Sashimi with Yuzu Dressing
Rolled up salad greens, slightly seared salmon in a bed of Japanese Yuzu dressing. MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! This dish changed my life. I am now willing to eat raw salmon, as long as it is of this quality! It's one of the most amazing things I've tasted my whole life, and just makes it even more worth living.

4th Course: Chef Oi's Sushi Selection
Bluefin, Mackerel, Scallop, Tamago
Each sushi in this selection had their own distinct taste and texture, but all of them were topped on a block of delicious Japanese rice that is not-too-sticky, and with a little sweetness to it. This is also the first time that I ate sushi without the need to dip it in soy sauce, and I enjoyed it even more. And oh, their tamago is an extra special one. Think of it as a mid-meal dessert lol. Fluffy and sweet, it's a tamago I've never EVER had before.

5th Course: Rock Shrimp Tempura
Crispy on the outside, soft in the inside tempura balls covered in a creamy mayo sauce on a bed of greens. In my terms, this is the Japanese counterpart of the Chinese hot prawns salad, except that it did not have any fruits in it. And, I was able to appreciate its savory, and not too spicy taste.

6th Course: Black Cod Miso
Cod fish cooked in a thick, sweet sauce, wrapped in a banana leaf and served with a ginger sprout as a palate cleanser.

7th Course: Akadashi Soup
Red miso soup with mushrooms, clams and seaweed. Their soup had the same miso taste, only on an upgraded level because the other ingredients were also nicely infused in it.

8th Course: Miso Cappuccino
A layered dessert made with chocolate mousse, vanilla ice cream, candied pecans, and soft miso foam dusted with some powdered coffee, chocolate and cinnamon. This is a sinfully addicting, tough to beat dessert. The combination of all the different elements in a small cup and the perfectly harmonized taste makes it a great hit.

The ambiance of the restaurant is dreamy. It's the kind of ambiance that's perfect for every special occasion - whether it be a romantic or family-related celebration. Their outdoor area is still very well painted on my mind as of the moment. The service was also impeccable. Staff were also so courteous, and not to mention well-oriented on anything and everything about the restaurant.

Nobu restaurant promises a different experience on every visit, and I can't wait to discover how their food's quality beyond measure will impress me the next time around.

(Nobu's Omakase is priced at P4,480 per person)

My Scores:
