Fresh, Handmade Pastas at Q & A Kitchen + Bar

by - Friday, January 25, 2019

My friends and I were looking for a place to have dinner right after attending a simple and intimate gathering, and we came across this restaurant which I've been hearing good comments about for the past days.

Q & A Kitchen + Bar is the newest dining spot in Salcedo, Makati. It's a relatively small place with a simple, dark yet elegant-looking interiors perfect for a quiet date night. The restaurant promises serving all things fresh, with homemade pastas being the first on their list.

Q&A kitchen-style jumbo meatballs and toasted ciabatta P595
We started our dinner with the meatballs in marinara sauce and toasted ciabatta. We weren't very impressed with it since the meat from the meatballs was grainy and dry.

Duck and fontina cheese croquettes with raisin verjus P565
The croquettes did better, which was filled with pulled duck meat and cheese. It was delicious, although not really special.

Maltagliati “fall-off-the-bone” beef brisket Bourguignon P665
One of the highly recommended dishes from this restaurant is the maltagliati beef brisket bourguignon. It's pasta with bacon, mushrooms, and cheese. The serving is a bit hefty considering the price.

Potato gnocchi, wild mushrooms and Parmigiano-Reggiano P675
The potato gnocchi tasted so plain and simple. It's your starchy pasta with mushrooms and cheese.

Squid ink linguini, calamari, prawns and sliced lemon pieces P685 (from specials)
We were most excited for the squid ink linguini, but it's also what disappointed us the most. It looked delicious, as it was topped with huge prawns and squid rings, but frankly, it was bland.

Grilled 350 grams U.S. Angus skirt steak, arugula, Parmigiano-Reggiano, with chimichurri and lettuce salad P1,350

I love steak! Thankfully, this perfectly grilled Angus steak came to the rescue. Not a lot of people will appreciate it, though, since it is drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. It's also topped with parmesan and arugula, and served with salt, chimichurri sauce, and salad on the side. It's an unusual way to serve steak, but I liked it. It's also best if served rare, but we tried it cooked medium and it also tasted good.

Overall, the ambiance and the service here in Q&A are both very impressive. The food tasted average, and we think everything is overpriced. It was too expensive for us, and we didn't even enjoy it that much. I cannot say that I will recommend this restaurant to my friends, but I do hope that our experience was just an isolated case.
